An eSIM needs an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone. Most phones from the last few years qualify — here's the short list.
iPhone
iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and newer (XS/XR through the latest models, including SE 2nd gen and later) support eSIM. Phones bought in mainland China are an exception and may not have eSIM.
Android
- Google Pixel 3 and newer (Pixel 3 and up; note the Pixel 3 sold in some regions lacked eSIM).
- Samsung Galaxy — S20 series and newer, recent Note (Note 20+), Z Fold / Z Flip, and many A-series models.
- Plus a growing range of recent Motorola, Sony, Oppo, and Huawei devices.
How to check your phone
iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM. If you see the option,
you're set.
Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM,
or dial *#06# and look for an EID number — if your
phone shows an EID, it supports eSIM.
Carrier-unlock note
Your phone must be carrier-unlocked to use a third-party eSIM. If you bought it on a carrier contract, ask that carrier to unlock it first — a locked phone will reject the eSIM even if the hardware supports it.
