Stadium Days in the 2026 World Cup Host Cities
The 2026 World Cup was played in 16 cities across the US, Canada and Mexico between 11 June and 19 July 2026. The stadiums are still there, still hosting football, other sports and concerts. Whatever brings you to one, the connectivity problem on the day is the same: tens of thousands of people, one patch of network, and a phone that has to hold your ticket, find your friends and get you home.
Before you leave the hotel
- Load your ticket in advance. Many venues use mobile tickets in an app or your phone's wallet. Open it on Wi-Fi, check whether it works offline, and follow the venue's rules on screenshots.
- Download an offline map of the area around the stadium, including the transit station or parking area you'll use.
- Charge everything. Bring a power bank if the venue allows one; check its bag policy first.
- Agree a meeting point with your group, a fixed landmark outside a specific gate. If messages stall, everyone knows where to go.
- Screenshot the plan for getting home: last trains, the ride-hail pickup area, your hotel address.
Inside: when the whole crowd shares a network
A full stadium puts heavy load on the nearby network. Expect messages to queue, photos to upload slowly and pages to stall around kickoff, half-time and the final whistle. That's congestion, not a fault with your plan (slow travel eSIM data explains how to tell the difference). What helps:
- Send text before photos. A short message gets through when a video won't.
- Queue uploads for later, or let them run on hotel Wi-Fi tonight.
Getting home
The end of an event is when everyone opens a ride-hail app at once. Many large venues set up designated pickup areas and prices rise with demand. Two things help: walk a few blocks away from the stadium before booking, and keep a transit route saved offline as plan B. Networks usually recover as the crowd spreads out.
How much data an event day uses
Less than you might expect, because congestion slows everyone down. Count a heavy photo-and-video day at our streaming rate of 1.3 GB, about 1.5 GB with 15% headroom, and add it to an otherwise normal trip.
The host cities, and where to start
The 16 host cities had very different stadium days. Some stadiums sit downtown, others in a neighbouring city or out by the highway, which changes how you get there and home.
United States
City guides with airports and getting into town: Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York (the final was played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey), Philadelphia, the San Francisco Bay Area (see the San Francisco guide; the stadium is in Santa Clara) and Seattle. Questions
Should I use the stadium's Wi-Fi?
If it's offered and working, it can take load off your plan, but don't count on it in a full venue, and avoid logging into anything sensitive on it.
My phone shows signal but nothing loads. Is the eSIM broken?
Probably not. In a packed venue that's usually congestion. Switch airplane mode on and off once, send text rather than photos, and give it time as the crowd thins. If nothing loads well away from the venue, work through the no-service fixes.
Can I share my data with a friend whose phone has no signal?
Most plans allow hotspot sharing, but it depends on the local network. Check the plan details first, and expect a shared connection to be slow while the stadium network is busy.
