Travel eSIM Data Slow? What to Check
Your eSIM is connected, but pages crawl and video buffers. Slow data has a handful of causes, and each has a different fix. Work out which one you have before changing settings at random.
If you have no data at all, that's a different problem: see no service after landing or the general troubleshooting guide.
Cause 1: you hit the daily high-speed cap
Unlimited plans come with a daily high-speed cap, shown on the plan. Once you pass it, data keeps working but at a much lower speed until the next day's allowance starts. Maps and messages still get through; video and big uploads struggle.
How to tell: the slowdown starts later in the day, after heavy use, and is gone the next morning. Check the plan line on your product page for the exact cap, and your account page for usage (how to read it).
What to do:
- Move heavy jobs to Wi-Fi: photo backup, app updates, downloads for the flight home.
- Lower video quality in streaming apps.
- If a hotspot is running, everything on it counts towards the same cap. A laptop syncing in the background can use the day's allowance quickly; our hotspot post lists the settings that stop it.
- If you hit the cap most days, the plan type doesn't match how you use data. Fixed data or unlimited shows how to compare your heaviest day with the cap.
Cause 2: the network is busy
Every mobile network slows down where many people use it at once: stadiums, festivals, train stations at rush hour, arrival halls when several flights land together, popular viewpoints at sunset.
How to tell: it's slow in one place or at one time, and fine a few streets away or an hour later.
What to do: wait, move a little, or use Wi-Fi if it is available. Download what you need, such as tickets and offline maps, before you get to a crowded event.
Cause 3: you are on a weaker network
A travel eSIM can often use more than one local network in a country. The phone picks one automatically, and it doesn't always pick the strongest one where you are standing.
How to tell: the signal is weak and the problem stays in the same area.
What to do: try another network by hand.
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → your travel line → Network Selection → turn off Automatic, wait for the list, choose another network.
- Android: Mobile networks → Network operators → turn off automatic selection, search, choose another network.
Use the networks listed on your destination guide, for example the Europe guide or the Japan guide. Give each choice a minute. If nothing is better, switch back to automatic so the phone can move between networks as you travel.
Cause 4: the phone's network mode
Sometimes the phone keeps jumping between network types, or holds on to a weak signal of one type when a stronger one is available. Changing the mode by hand can help.
- iPhone: Settings → Cellular → travel line → Voice & Data. Try a different option, such as LTE, and compare.
- Android: Mobile networks → Preferred network type. Try a different setting.
Test for a few minutes in the same place before deciding. Which network types your destination offers is shown on its guide, not something to assume.
Cause 5: something on the phone
- Low Data Mode or Data Saver can make some apps feel slow. That is the trade-off for saving data.
- Low Power Mode limits background activity.
- A VPN adds a detour. Try with it off to compare.
- A long session without a restart. A quick airplane-mode toggle or restart makes the phone register again.
Test it fairly
One slow page is not a pattern. Before you contact support, test the same thing (a short video, a map load) in two places and at two times of day. Note whether it was before or after heavy use. That tells you, and us, which cause you are looking at.
When to contact us
If data stays slow everywhere, at all times, after you have tried another network, email hello@e-sim.net with your order id, the city, the network you are on and what you tested. Plans for each destination are on the eSIM page.
Questions
Why does my unlimited eSIM slow down in the evening?
Unlimited plans have a daily high-speed cap, shown on the plan. After you pass it, speed drops until the next day's allowance starts. Evening crowds can also slow a busy network.
Will switching networks by hand cost anything?
No. You are choosing between networks your travel eSIM can already use. Switch back to automatic when you move on.
Does using a hotspot slow my data?
Not by itself, but everything on the hotspot counts towards the same plan or daily cap, so you can reach the cap sooner.
Should I change the network mode?
Try it if data is unstable. On iPhone, Settings → Cellular → travel line → Voice & Data lets you pick a different mode; on Android, look for Preferred network type. Test for a few minutes in the same place before deciding.
