Data Roaming: on for the eSIM, off for home

2026-10-16 · 3 min read

Two settings with the same name do opposite jobs on a trip. Data Roaming on the travel eSIM has to be on, or the eSIM won't carry any data. Data Roaming on your home line should be off, or your carrier can bill you for data abroad. Here's why, and what happens with each combination.

Why the eSIM needs roaming on

A phone decides whether it's "roaming" by comparing the network it's connected to with the network that issued the SIM. A travel eSIM is issued by a provider that partners with local networks in your destination. To your phone, that local network is not the eSIM's home network, so the connection counts as roaming.

With Data Roaming off, the phone refuses to use mobile data on a roaming connection. You'll see signal bars from the local network, but nothing loads. This is a very common reason a new travel eSIM shows signal but no internet.

Turning it on doesn't add any charges. The eSIM is prepaid: you can only use the data you bought. The setting just lets the phone use it.

Why the home line needs roaming off

Your home line is billed by your carrier. Abroad, mobile data on that line is charged at whatever rate your carrier sets for that country, from free in some cases to expensive in others. If Data Roaming is on and the phone ever uses the home line for data, your carrier can bill you for it.

Turning it off blocks mobile data only. Calls and SMS on the home line keep working, so you still receive bank codes. Calls and texts you make are priced by your carrier.

All four combinations

eSIM roamingHome roamingWhat happens
OnOffCorrect. Data on the eSIM; the home line can't use data.
OffOffSignal but no data. Nothing is charged, nothing loads.
OnOnWorks, but if the phone switches data to the home line, your carrier can bill you.
OffOnThe riskiest one: the eSIM can't carry data, and if data switching is on or mobile data points at the home line, your carrier can bill you.

Where the settings live

iPhone

Settings → Cellular (Mobile Data in some regions). Tap the travel eSIM line and turn Data Roaming on. Go back, tap your home line and turn Data Roaming off.

Android

Menu names vary by maker. On many phones: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → pick the line → Roaming. On Samsung, data roaming is under Settings → Connections → Mobile networks. If you can't find it, search the Settings app for "roaming".

The setting people confuse with roaming

The Cellular Data (mobile data) choice picks which line carries data. Roaming only allows or blocks data on a line. You need both: the eSIM chosen for data, with roaming on. That choice, data switching, the default voice line and switching a line off completely are covered in dual-SIM settings for travel.

When to change them

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and set the roles before you fly. The eSIM's validity starts when it first connects in your destination, so having roaming on before departure doesn't start anything at home. On landing, switch airplane mode off and the eSIM should connect.

What to do with the eSIM once you're home is covered in delete or keep your eSIM after the trip.

Still no data with the right settings?

Then the problem is somewhere else: the network selection, the APN or coverage. Work through the landing-day fix sequence, then the wider eSIM not working checklist. Questions

Does turning on Data Roaming for the eSIM cost extra?

No. The eSIM is prepaid. The setting only allows it to use the plan you bought on the local network. Nothing is billed beyond the plan.

If Data Roaming is off on my home line, can I still get calls and SMS?

Yes. The setting only blocks mobile data. Calls and SMS still work, and your carrier sets their price abroad, so check its rates.

Why does my phone say I'm roaming with the eSIM?

The eSIM's provider isn't the local network, so the phone treats the connection as roaming. That is normal for travel eSIMs.

Do I need to change anything when I get home?

Turn the eSIM line off or leave it; set mobile data back to your home line. Data Roaming on the home line doesn't matter at home.
