Installing an eSIM on your iPhone takes just a couple of minutes, and you can do it before you even leave home. This guide covers both ways to install an eSIM on iPhone — scanning the QR code and, on iOS 17.4 or later, using a one-tap install link — so your travel data is ready the moment you land.
Before you install an eSIM on your iPhone
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Install the eSIM at home before you fly, not at the airport abroad.
- Update to the latest iOS (Settings ▸ General ▸ Software Update).
- Confirm your iPhone is eSIM-capable and unlocked. iPhone XS and newer generally support eSIM — if you are unsure, check whether your phone supports eSIM.
- Have your QR code or install link ready — we email it instantly after purchase from e-sim.net.
Option 1: one-tap install link (iOS 17.4+)
If you are on iOS 17.4 or later, this is the fastest route.
- Step 1: Open our confirmation email on the iPhone itself and tap the install link.
- Step 2: Tap Allow when iOS asks to add a cellular plan.
- Step 3: Follow the prompts, then give the plan a clear label such as Travel.
Option 2: scan the QR code
This works on any eSIM iPhone. Open the QR code on a second screen — a laptop or another phone — so your iPhone camera can scan it.
- Step 1: Go to Settings ▸ Cellular (called Mobile Service in some regions).
- Step 2: Tap Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
- Step 3: Point the camera at the QR code and tap through the prompts.
- Step 4: Label the plan something obvious like Travel.
Set your iPhone lines correctly
This is the step most people miss. Because a travel eSIM is data-only, you want your home number available for calls while your data comes from the eSIM.
- In Settings ▸ Cellular, set Cellular Data to your travel eSIM.
- Leave your home SIM as the line for Calls & Messages so you keep your number.
- Turn OFF data roaming on your home SIM to avoid expensive home-carrier charges.
Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM
Select the travel eSIM in Cellular settings and switch Data Roaming ON for that line only. This sounds alarming, but it is completely normal for a travel eSIM: it is how the eSIM connects to local partner networks. Because you disabled roaming on your home SIM, there is no risk of a surprise bill from your own carrier.
Activate and test
Your eSIM installs immediately but usually activates when you reach your destination and it registers on a local network. When you arrive, toggle Airplane Mode off and on, and load a webpage. For the full timeline, see how to activate your eSIM. If nothing loads, our eSIM troubleshooting guide walks through the fixes.
FAQ
Can I install the eSIM before I travel?
Yes, and you should. Install it on home Wi-Fi so everything is ready. Most plans activate on arrival when they first connect to a local network, not at install time.
I do not have iOS 17.4 — can I still install?
Absolutely. Older iOS versions simply use the QR-code method (Option 2). The one-tap link is a convenience, not a requirement.
Will installing an eSIM delete my current SIM?
No. Your physical SIM and any existing eSIMs stay in place. You are just adding another line and choosing which one carries data.
Why does the eSIM say No Service until I land?
Many travel plans only register once you are within their coverage area. That is expected — it should connect shortly after you arrive.
