eSIM Won't Install? Causes and Fixes

2026-10-19 · 4 min read

An eSIM install that stalls or throws an error is stressful when your flight is close. Most failures come from four things: the connection during install, a locked phone, an eSIM that is actually already installed, or a QR code that has already been used. Check them in that order, and don't delete anything while you do.

For the normal install flow, see our step-by-step guides for iPhone and Android. This post is for when that flow does not finish.

Step 0: is it already installed?

A surprising number of "failed" installs actually worked. The phone may show an error or time out on the last screen even though the eSIM was added.

If the line is there, stop. It will show No Service at home, which is normal: it connects when you land in a covered country. Retrying the install will only produce a "code already used" error.

Cause 1: the connection during install

The phone downloads the eSIM over the internet, so a weak or filtered connection is the most common cause of a stalled install.

This is why we suggest installing at home, days before you travel. The plan's validity starts only when it first connects in your destination, so installing early costs nothing.

Cause 2: the phone is carrier-locked

A phone locked to one carrier can refuse a travel eSIM outright, or accept it and never connect. On iPhone, check Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. It must say "No SIM restrictions". Android has no single setting for this, so ask your carrier. Our guide to checking for a carrier lock goes through it in detail.

Cause 3: the phone does not support eSIM

If there is no Add eSIM option at all, the phone may not support eSIM, or its software is out of date. Update it first, then run the two-minute check in does my phone support eSIM or look it up on the device list.

Cause 4: no room for another eSIM

Phones can store only so many eSIMs. If yours says it can't add another plan, remove an old travel eSIM you have finished with. Never remove your home line or the eSIM you are about to travel on. How many eSIMs a phone can hold explains the limits.

Cause 5: "This code is no longer valid"

Messages like "Cellular plan cannot be added" or "This code is no longer valid" usually mean the QR code has already been used. A travel eSIM QR code installs once. That happens when:

Why you should not delete and retry

When something looks wrong, deleting the eSIM and starting again feels natural. With a travel eSIM it usually makes things worse: the QR code is single-use, so a deleted eSIM often can't be reinstalled from it. If an installed eSIM shows No Service at home, that is expected. If it shows No Service after you land, follow the landing-day fix sequence instead.

Questions

Can I reuse the QR code if I deleted the eSIM?

Usually not. A travel eSIM QR code installs once. Email hello@e-sim.net with your order id instead of scanning again.

My eSIM installed but shows No Service at home. Is it broken?

No. It connects when you arrive in a covered country. Leave it installed.

Can I install the eSIM on hotel Wi-Fi?

It often works, but networks with a sign-in page can block the download. A stable home or office Wi-Fi network is the safest choice.

Do I get a refund if it never installs or connects?

Yes. If the eSIM never connects, you get a full refund. Email hello@e-sim.net with your order id.
