eSIM No Service After Landing? Fix It in Order
You have landed, the seatbelt sign is off and the travel eSIM shows No Service, or bars with no internet. Almost every case is a setting, and the fixes below are in the order that solves the most cases first. Do them one at a time and give each a minute before moving on.
This is the landing-day version of our wider eSIM troubleshooting guide. If the eSIM never installed at all, see what to do when an eSIM won't install instead.
First, read the symptom
- No bars, or "No Service" on the travel line: the phone is not registering on a network. Steps 1, 4, 5 and 6 matter most.
- Bars, but nothing loads: the phone is on a network but is not sending data over the eSIM. Steps 2 and 3 matter most.
Before you start, check that the country you are in is covered by the plan you bought. The coverage list is on the product page, for example Europe or Global.
The fix sequence
- Turn the eSIM line on. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → tap your travel line → Turn On This Line. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs (Samsung: Connections → SIM manager) → switch the travel eSIM on. Lines installed at home are sometimes left off.
- Turn Data Roaming on for the eSIM. On the same screen for the travel line, switch Data Roaming on. To your phone, a travel eSIM is always roaming, so this is the most common cause of bars without data. Keep it off for your home line. Data Roaming, explained covers why.
- Choose the travel line for cellular data. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data → pick the travel eSIM. Turn off Allow Cellular Data Switching so the phone doesn't fall back to the home line. Android: set the travel eSIM as the mobile data SIM in SIM settings. The full two-line set-up is in dual-SIM settings for travel.
- Toggle airplane mode. On for about 15 seconds, then off. This makes the phone search for networks again, which helps when it is still holding on to the network it last saw at home or at the departure airport.
- Restart the phone. A full restart clears a stuck registration more thoroughly than airplane mode.
- Select the network manually. iPhone: Settings → Cellular → travel line → Network Selection → turn off Automatic and wait for the list. Android: Mobile networks → Network operators → turn off automatic selection and search. Pick a network listed in your destination guide, for example the Japan guide, and wait a minute. If it fails, try the next one on the list.
Leave the APN alone unless our support team gives you one. Travel eSIMs normally set it automatically.
Landing-day traps
- You changed planes on the way. A regional or global eSIM may already have connected during the layover. That isn't a fault, but its validity has started. See layovers and your eSIM clock.
- You are in the right region but the wrong plan. The EU & UK plan doesn't cover Switzerland or the western Balkans, for example. Europe or EU & UK lists the ones people miss.
- The phone still shows your home carrier's name. You are looking at the home line. Check the travel line's own screen in Settings.
- You need data right now. Join the airport Wi-Fi first. It gets you a ride and lets you email us while you keep working through the steps.
What not to do
- Don't delete the eSIM. A deleted eSIM usually can't be installed again from the same QR code, and it leaves support with nothing to check.
- Don't reset network settings as a first step. It wipes saved Wi-Fi networks and other settings, and the steps above fix the usual causes without it.
- Don't keep toggling every few seconds. Registration on a new network can take a minute or two after landing, especially in a busy arrival hall.
Still nothing? Contact us
Connect to airport or café Wi-Fi and email hello@e-sim.net with your order id, the country you are in, your phone model, and a screenshot of the travel line's settings. We will check the eSIM from our side.
If the eSIM never connects, you get a full refund. Once it has connected, the plan counts as used, which is one more reason not to delete it while you troubleshoot. The full terms are on the refund page.
Set yourself up for the next landing
- Install at home on Wi-Fi, then check the line appears under Settings → Cellular before you fly.
- Before landing, switch the travel line on, Data Roaming on for it, and set it as the cellular data line. The plan's validity starts only when it first connects in your destination, so turning these on early costs nothing.
- Save hello@e-sim.net and your order id somewhere offline.
- Check your phone is unlocked before you buy: how to tell if your phone is carrier-locked.
Questions
Why do I have bars but no internet?
The phone is registered on a network but is not using the eSIM for data. Turn on Data Roaming for the travel line and make sure it is chosen for cellular data.
Should I delete and reinstall the eSIM if it shows No Service?
No. A deleted eSIM usually can't be installed again from the same QR code. Work through the fix steps, then email hello@e-sim.net with your order id.
Do I need to enter an APN?
Usually not, as travel eSIMs set it automatically. Enter one only if our support team gives you an APN for your plan.
What if the eSIM never connects?
You get a full refund if the eSIM never connects. Email hello@e-sim.net with your order id.
