Ski trip to the Alps: eSIM, borders and battery

2026-10-17 · 6 min read

For a ski trip to the Alps, pick by border. Staying in one country, a country plan does it. If your ski area or day trip crosses into Switzerland, choose the Europe eSIM: the EU & UK eSIM does not cover Switzerland. Install before you leave, plan for cold batteries, and download the piste map for the spots with no signal.

Ski areas cross borders

Several big ski areas span two countries, and you can end the day in a different one from where you started. Zermatt’s lifts link to Cervinia in Italy, and the Portes du Soleil area joins French and Swiss resorts. Near a border, your phone can also pick up the neighbouring country’s network from the slope.

Signal on the mountain

Signal is usually good near lifts, mountain restaurants and in the villages. It can be weak or missing in gullies, on the far side of a ridge and off-piste. Before you go up:

If data feels slow at the top, it may be congestion or the plan’s daily cap: why travel data is slow.

Safety: what a phone can and can’t do

A phone is not an avalanche transceiver. Off-piste, carry proper avalanche equipment and go with someone qualified. Save the resort’s piste rescue number in your contacts on day one. In Europe, 112 reaches emergency services.

Set it up before you fly

  1. Check your phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked: supported devices.
  2. Pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. Your account is created from the payment.
  3. Install at home on Wi-Fi. On iPhone it installs from a link; elsewhere you scan the QR code. Both are on the install page and in your receipt. Steps for iPhone and Android.
  4. When you land, turn on the eSIM line and Data Roaming for it. Validity starts when it first connects in the destination.

Questions

Which eSIM covers a ski trip in the Alps?

If your trip touches Switzerland, the Europe eSIM: at the time of writing it covers France, Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The EU & UK eSIM does not include Switzerland. A single-country plan works if you stay in one country.

Will my phone work on the slopes?

Usually near lifts, stations and resort villages. High up, in gullies and off-piste, signal can be weak or missing. Download offline maps and the resort map before you go up.

Why does my phone die so fast in the cold?

Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity in the cold and can shut down early. Keep the phone in an inside pocket near your body, carry a small power bank, and turn off what you don't need.

How much data do I need for a week of skiing?

About 1.6 GB for maps and messaging, about 4 GB if you post photos and videos, and about 10.5 GB if you stream in the evenings. These include 15% headroom.

Is my phone an avalanche safety device?

No. A phone is not an avalanche transceiver. Off-piste, carry proper avalanche equipment and go with someone qualified. In Europe, 112 reaches emergency services.
