eSIM for Switzerland: outside EU roaming
Switzerland is outside the EU, so the EU roaming rules that make phones cheap in France or Italy don’t apply there. A Switzerland eSIM covers a Swiss-only trip. If you also cross into France, Italy, Germany or Austria, take the Europe eSIM, which includes Switzerland. The EU & UK eSIM does not.
Why roaming catches people out here
Many travellers arrive from an EU country where their phone just worked, and assume it will in Switzerland too. Switzerland is not in the EU or the EEA, so the roam-like-at-home rule doesn’t cover it. Some carriers include Switzerland in their Europe zone and some charge separately. Visitors from the UK, the US and elsewhere pay whatever their carrier charges for Switzerland. Check before you go, or carry a travel eSIM for data. The wider comparison is in eSIM vs roaming in Europe.

The border catch: Basel and Geneva
Switzerland’s borders run close to two of its airports, and that matters for a Swiss-only plan:
- Basel: the EuroAirport (BSL) is on French soil. Your phone may join a French network in the terminal, where a Switzerland-only plan won’t give you data. It will once you are in Switzerland.
- Geneva: the city is almost surrounded by France. Near the border, a phone can drift onto a French network. If your Swiss plan suddenly shows no data, choose a Swiss network manually in the network settings.
If you are flying into Basel, staying near Geneva or crossing borders on day trips, the Europe eSIM avoids the problem. City arrival notes: Zurich, Geneva, Basel.
Trains, mountains and tunnels
- Trains: timetables, platform changes and digital tickets all live in the rail apps. You will check them more often than you expect.
- Mountains: signal is generally good in towns and at mountain stations, weaker on high trails and in deep valleys. Download offline maps before a hike.
- Tunnels: long tunnels and narrow valleys can drop the signal briefly. It comes back on its own.
- Skiing: see ski trips to the Alps for cross-border ski areas and cold batteries.

Set it up before you fly
- Check your phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked: supported devices.
- Pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. Your account is created from the payment.
- Install at home on Wi-Fi. On iPhone it installs from a link; elsewhere you scan the QR code. Both are on the install page and in your receipt. Steps for iPhone and Android.
- When you land, turn on the eSIM line and Data Roaming for it. Validity starts when it first connects in the destination.

Questions
Does EU roaming work in Switzerland?
Not automatically. Switzerland is not in the EU or the EEA, so the EU roam-like-at-home rule doesn't apply there. Some carriers include Switzerland anyway; check your plan before you go.
Which eSIM is best for Switzerland?
For Switzerland only, the Switzerland plan. If you also visit France, Italy, Germany or Austria, the Europe eSIM covers Switzerland and its neighbours at the time of writing. The EU & UK eSIM does not include Switzerland.
Will a Switzerland eSIM work at Basel airport?
Possibly not. The EuroAirport serving Basel is on French soil, so your phone may connect to a French network there. A Switzerland-only plan works once you are in Switzerland; the Europe eSIM works on both sides.
Can I get an eSIM for Switzerland without a contract?
Yes. Travel eSIMs are prepaid: you pay once, nothing renews, and validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Switzerland.
How much data do I need for a week in Switzerland?
About 1.6 GB for maps and messaging, about 4 GB with photos and social apps, about 10.5 GB if you stream. These include 15% headroom.
