Christmas markets: one eSIM across Europe
A Christmas market trip often turns into a few cities in a few days: Munich to Salzburg by train, Vienna to Prague, Strasbourg with a hop over to Germany. One eSIM that works across those borders saves you from switching plans in the cold. Here is how to choose it and how much data a winter city break needs.
Popular market routes
Most winter city breaks centre on a handful of countries. Our city guides cover arrival and getting around in each of these:
- Germany: Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg.
- Austria: Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck.
- France: Strasbourg, close to the German border.
- Czechia: Prague.
Some routes add Budapest, or cross into Switzerland at Basel or Zurich. That last one changes which plan you need.
Which eSIM covers your route
- One country only: a country plan is the simple choice, for example Germany or Austria. The Germany guide shows networks and plan sizes.
- Several EU countries (Germany, Austria, France, Czechia, Hungary): EU & UK covers all of them, plus the UK.
- Switzerland on the route: Switzerland is not in the EU, so EU & UK doesn't cover it. The Europe eSIM does at the time of writing.
Check every country, including day trips, against the list on the Europe guide. Europe or EU & UK eSIM has the full route check.
Check each city's market dates
Markets usually run from late November to around Christmas. The exact dates vary by city and by market: some close before 24 December, some reopen or carry on towards New Year, and opening hours change on the holidays themselves. Check each city's official dates before you book trains, and again closer to the trip.
Your eSIM doesn't need to match those dates exactly. Validity starts when your phone first connects to a network in a covered country, not when you buy, so you can install it weeks ahead.
What you'll use data for
- Trains and tickets. Rail apps, platform changes and e-tickets between cities.
- Maps after dark. It gets dark early in December, and old towns are easy to get lost in. You'll use directions to the next market, or back to the hotel, a lot.
- Photos and video. Lights, stalls and night shots. Uploading video uses the most data.
- Messages with your group. Markets are busy, so people drift apart.
How much data for a market trip
Our recommender uses 0.2 GB a day for maps and messaging, 0.5 GB a day for socials and photos, and 1.3 GB a day for streaming or video, then adds 15% headroom.
| Trip | Maps and messaging | Socials and photos | Video and streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 days | about 0.9 GB | about 2.3 GB | about 6 GB |
| 7 days | about 1.6 GB | about 4 GB | about 10.5 GB |
Most city breaks sit in the middle column. Hotel Wi-Fi in the evenings brings the total down.
Cold, crowds and battery
- Cold drains batteries faster. Keep your phone in an inside pocket between photos, and carry a power bank.
- Busy squares can slow data. On a crowded weekend evening, a lot of people share the same cells. Download offline maps of each city before you go, and see slow travel eSIM data if it stays slow.
- Agree a meeting point. Pick a landmark at each market, so your group can regroup without relying on messages.
- Save tickets offline. Screenshots or your wallet app, so a slow connection never holds you up at the gate.
Crossing borders by train
When the train crosses a border, your phone moves to a partner network in the next country. Keep Data Roaming on for the eSIM line, because travel eSIMs use partner networks, and keep it off for your home line. If data stops after a border, toggle airplane mode once and give it a minute. One eSIM for a multi-country trip covers border crossings in more detail.
Before you go
- Check your phone is carrier-unlocked and on the device list.
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. On iPhone it installs from a link; on other phones you scan the QR code.
- Download offline maps for every city and save your train tickets.
Questions
Does one eSIM work in Germany, Austria and Czechia?
Yes. At the time of writing, both the EU & UK eSIM and the Europe eSIM cover Germany, Austria, France and Czechia.
I'm visiting Basel or Zurich too. Which eSIM do I need?
The Europe eSIM. Switzerland isn't in the EU, so the EU & UK eSIM doesn't cover it.
When do Christmas markets open?
Usually from late November to around Christmas, but dates vary by city and by market. Check each city's official dates before you book.
How much data do I need for a 4-day market trip?
About 2.3 GB for socials and photos, including 15% headroom. About 6 GB if you upload a lot of video.
