eSIM for Morocco: medinas, desert and ferries
For Morocco, a Morocco eSIM covers the country with data only. The Europe eSIM does not include Morocco, so a Spain-and-Morocco trip needs two eSIMs on the same phone or a Global plan. Download offline maps before the medinas, expect gaps on desert routes, and keep your home line on for SMS codes.
Which plan for which trip
| Trip | Plan |
|---|---|
| Morocco only | Morocco |
| Spain, then the ferry to Morocco | A Spain or Europe eSIM plus a Morocco eSIM, switching the data line at the border; or Global |
| Morocco plus Egypt, Jordan or the Gulf | Middle East & North Africa, which includes Morocco at the time of writing |
A phone can hold several eSIMs. Install both at home, then on the ferry switch which one carries data. How: one trip, several countries.

In the medina
The old medinas of Fes and Marrakech are lanes, arches and high walls, and GPS struggles there: the blue dot jumps, and a two-minute walk can show as five. A few habits help:
- Download an offline map of the city before you arrive and pin your riad.
- Save your riad’s phone number and a photo of its door or nearest landmark. Many riads will send someone to meet you at a gate or square.
- Use landmarks, gates and squares to navigate, and the map to check direction.
Riads usually have Wi-Fi, but thick walls can make it weak in rooms far from the router. Your own data covers the gap. Arrival notes: Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, Tangier, Agadir.
On the road to the desert
Mountain passes in the Atlas and the camps at the edge of the Sahara can have weak or no signal. Before a desert trip:
- Download maps for the whole route, not just the destination.
- Share your itinerary and the camp’s name with someone at home.
- Carry a power bank: charging can be limited at camps.
Calls, messages and your number
Our Morocco plans are data-only. Messaging apps work over the data, and your home number stays on the phone for bank and airline SMS codes with Data Roaming off for that line. Whether internet voice calls connect depends on the app and the network, so don’t rely on them for anything critical. Settings in keep your number and WhatsApp abroad.

Set it up before you fly
- Check your phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked: supported devices.
- Pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. Your account is created from the payment.
- Install at home on Wi-Fi. On iPhone it installs from a link; elsewhere you scan the QR code. Both are on the install page and in your receipt. Steps for iPhone and Android.
- When you land, turn on the eSIM line and Data Roaming for it. Validity starts when it first connects in the destination.

Questions
Which eSIM is best for Morocco?
For Morocco alone, the Morocco plan. The Europe eSIM does not cover Morocco, so a trip that combines Spain and Morocco needs either two eSIMs on the same phone or a Global plan that lists both countries.
Can I make calls in Morocco with an eSIM?
Our Morocco plans are data-only, with no Moroccan number. Messaging works over data, and your home number stays on the phone for SMS. Whether internet calls connect depends on the app and the network, so keep your home line available for anything important.
Are there unlimited data plans for Morocco?
At the time of writing our Morocco plans are fixed data only. The plan table on this page shows the sizes; pick one with the data maths here plus a little headroom.
Do I need an eSIM in Morocco, or is Wi-Fi enough?
Riads and hotels usually have Wi-Fi, but you need data in the medina, in taxis, on the road to the desert and when meeting a guide. For anything beyond one city, carry data.
How much data do I need for a week in Morocco?
About 1.6 GB for maps and messaging, about 4 GB with photos and social apps, and about 10.5 GB if you stream. These figures include 15% headroom.
