eSIM for the Dominican Republic: resorts and more
For the Dominican Republic, buy the Dominican Republic plan. At the time of writing, our Caribbean eSIM does not cover it, which catches people who assume it does. Resort Wi-Fi handles evenings in your room; your own data covers transfers, excursions and the beach.

Resort Wi-Fi vs your own data
All-inclusive resorts usually have Wi-Fi, but large resorts spread over a long beach often have weak spots at the pool, the beach and the far buildings. Wi-Fi also stays behind when you leave. You’ll want your own data for:
- Finding your transfer driver at Punta Cana airport.
- Excursions: boat days, island trips and tours, where meeting points and changes arrive by message.
- Keeping in touch with your group across a big resort.
If your plan is to stay put and read by the pool, see travelling on Wi-Fi only for when that works.
Fixed or unlimited
For a resort week, a fixed plan is often enough, since you will be on Wi-Fi in the evening. Unlimited plans have a daily high-speed allowance shown on the plan line, after which speed drops. The maths: fixed data vs unlimited.
| Data a trip uses | 5 days | 7 days | 10 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maps and messaging | 1.1 GB | 1.6 GB | 2.3 GB |
| Plus socials and photos | 2.9 GB | 4 GB | 5.8 GB |
| Streaming or hotspot | 7.5 GB | 10.5 GB | 14.9 GB |

Set it up before you fly
- Check your phone is eSIM-capable and carrier-unlocked: supported devices.
- Pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. Your account is created from the payment.
- Install at home on Wi-Fi. On iPhone it installs from a link; elsewhere you scan the QR code. Both are on the install page and in your receipt. Steps for iPhone and Android.
- When you land, turn on the eSIM line and Data Roaming for it. Validity starts when it first connects in the destination.

Questions
What's the best eSIM for the Dominican Republic?
The Dominican Republic plan. At the time of writing the Caribbean eSIM does not list the Dominican Republic, so check the coverage list before buying a regional plan. Global covers it too.
Is resort Wi-Fi enough in Punta Cana?
For a stay inside the resort, sometimes. It is often weak at the beach and pool and no help on excursions or transfers. A small plan covers those.
Does my eSIM work on a cruise from the Dominican Republic?
Only in port. At sea, phones connect to the ship's maritime network, which travel eSIMs don't cover. Use ship Wi-Fi at sea.
Is there an unlimited plan for the Dominican Republic?
Yes, at the time of writing, with a daily high-speed allowance shown on the plan line. After it, speed drops for the rest of the day.
How much data do I need for a week in Punta Cana?
About 1.6 GB for maps and messaging, about 4 GB with photos and social apps, and about 10.5 GB if you stream. These include 15% headroom.
