Turkey eSIM: phone rules, ferries, layovers
Türkiye sits outside the EU, has its own rules for phones brought in from abroad, and is one of the world's busiest transit hubs. Each of those shapes which eSIM you want. Here is what matters for a holiday, a longer stay and a layover.
Why a travel eSIM fits a holiday in Türkiye
Türkiye is not in the EU, so EU roam-like-at-home rules don't apply there, and visitors from the EU, the UK and further afield all roam on their carrier's own terms. Check yours before you go.
The other reason is phone registration. Türkiye has rules on registering phones brought in from abroad once they are used for an extended period with a Turkish line. As far as we know, those rules are about local Turkish lines. A travel eSIM is a foreign plan that connects to local partner networks, so on a holiday the question generally doesn't come up: install it at home, land, and use data.
If you're moving to Türkiye, studying there or staying for months, check the current official rules for registering a foreign phone before you rely on any SIM. They change from time to time, and we don't want to guess at the details.
Türkiye only: the Türkiye plan

Greek island ferries
Bodrum faces Kos, Marmaris and Fethiye face Rhodes, and Çeşme near Izmir faces Chios. Day trips across are easy. A Türkiye plan stops at the water's edge, and so does a Greece plan in reverse. The Europe eSIM covers both Türkiye and Greece at the time of writing. The EU & UK eSIM does not include Türkiye.
On the coast your phone may also pick up a Greek network from the Turkish side, or the reverse. If data drops on a country plan, choose a local network manually in settings.
Georgia and the Balkans

The Istanbul layover
Istanbul is a hub for flights between Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. That matters for any regional plan that includes Türkiye. A plan's days start when your phone first connects to a network in a covered country, and a layover counts. If you hold a Europe eSIM for a trip that really starts in Rome, and you connect for two hours in Istanbul, the clock starts in Istanbul.
The fix is simple: keep the eSIM's data line off during the layover and use airport Wi-Fi, then switch it on when you land at your real destination. If you want data on a long layover, a small Türkiye plan is the cleaner choice.
How much data for Türkiye
Our recommender uses 0.2 GB a day for maps and messaging, 0.5 GB for socials and photos, and 1.3 GB for streaming or hotspot, then 15% headroom.
- Five days in Istanbul, posting every day: 2.5 GB, about 2.9 GB with headroom.
- A week on the coast with a rental car, mostly maps: 1.4 GB, about 1.6 GB with headroom.
- Ten days at a resort, streaming at night: 13 GB, about 15 GB with headroom.
Hotel Wi-Fi can cut those numbers, but don't count on it for the airport taxi or a balloon-morning pickup. More examples in how much data you need.
Practical notes
- Cappadocia's balloon flights start before dawn, and pickup changes can arrive by message. Make sure data is on before you sleep.
- Download offline maps before long bus or car days in the interior.
- Keep your home line on for calls and texts, with its data roaming off, so it doesn't use data on your carrier's terms.
