Portugal eSIM: mainland, islands and Spain

Portugal has one land neighbour and two island groups far out in the Atlantic. That shapes the eSIM choice more than anything else: stay in Portugal and the Portugal plan fits, add Spain and you want a regional plan, and if you're heading to Madeira or the Azores, check with us before you pay.

Mainland Portugal: the Portugal plan

Lisbon and Sintra, Porto and the Douro valley, or a week on the Algarve from Faro. If every night is in Portugal, start with the Portugal eSIM. You aren't paying for regional coverage you won't use. Compare its per-GB figures with the Europe page if you want to check.

Madeira and the Azores

Both island groups are part of Portugal, and we have city guides for Madeira and the Azores. Some coverage lists, including our global one, name the islands separately from the mainland, while the Portugal plan's coverage just says Portugal. Once there, plan for the terrain. Both are volcanic and steep, with levada walks, crater lakes and cliff roads where signal can fade between villages. Download offline maps for the whole island before you set out, save trail notes to the phone, and don't count on live navigation in the deeper valleys.

Adding Spain

The most common two-country trip is Portugal plus Spain: the Algarve with a day in Seville, Porto with a drive up to Galicia, or Lisbon to Madrid. A Portugal plan stops at the border. The EU & UK eSIM covers both countries, and so does the Europe eSIM. For Portugal and Spain alone, EU & UK is enough.

Along the river border in the Algarve and the north, your phone may sometimes see a Spanish network from the Portuguese side. On a country plan that can briefly mean no data. Choosing the Portuguese network manually in your settings usually fixes it.

Further afield

• Morocco is a short flight from Lisbon or Faro but isn't on either European regional plan. It has its own Morocco page. Keep both eSIMs installed and switch the data line when you land.
• A longer European loop with Switzerland, the Balkans or Türkiye calls for the Europe eSIM. The full border list is in Europe, EU & UK or one country.

The rule of thumb

1. Mainland Portugal only: Portugal plan.
2. Madeira or the Azores: Portugal plan, after checking with us.
3. Portugal and Spain, or other EU stops: EU & UK.
4. A stop outside the EU and UK in Europe: Europe.

Sizing it

We use the same daily rates as our recommender: 0.2 GB for maps and messaging, 0.5 GB for socials and photos, 1.3 GB for streaming or hotspot, with 15% headroom.

• A long weekend in Lisbon, posting photos: 4 days at 0.5 GB is 2 GB, about 2.3 GB with headroom.
• A week of hiking on Madeira with offline maps and messaging: 1.4 GB, about 1.6 GB with headroom.
• A month working remotely from Lisbon on a laptop through the phone: 39 GB, about 45 GB with headroom. Most plans allow sharing, but it depends on the local network, so check the plan details before you rely on it. If you'll be there longer, our nomad guide weighs the options.

Setting up

If your phone plan is from the EU, roam-like-at-home rules already cover Portugal within your plan's fair-use terms, so check those first. Otherwise, pay with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card, and install from the link (iPhone) or QR code on the install page while you're at home on Wi-Fi. The plan starts when your phone first connects in Portugal, not when you buy. Keep your home line on for calls and texts.
